Middle Years Programme, Grade 7-8 (Aged 10-12 as on July 1st)

MYP programme comprises of eight subject groups:

Each year, students in the MYP also engage in at least one collaboratively planned interdisciplinary unit that involves at least two subject groups.

MYP students also complete a long-term project, where they decide what they want to learn about, identify what they already know, discovering what they will need to know to complete the project, and create a proposal or criteria for completing it

Our approach to teaching and learning

The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community.

Teaching and learning in context

Students learn best when their learning experiences have context and are connected to their lives and their experience of the world that they have experienced.

Using global contexts, MYP students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of:

  • identities and relationships
  • personal and cultural identity
  • orientations in space and time
  • scientific and technical innovation
  • fairness and development
  • globalization and sustainability.
Conceptual understanding

Concepts are big ideas that have relevance within specific disciplines and across subject areas. MYP students use concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance and examine knowledge holistically. The MYP prescribes sixteen key interdisciplinary concepts along with related concepts for each discipline. 

Approaches to learning

A unifying thread throughout all MYP subject groups, approaches to learning (ATL) provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the application of their knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. Developing and applying these social, thinking, research, communication and self-management skills helps students learn how to learn. 

Service as action, through community service 

Action and service have always been shared values of the IB community.

Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service-making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. Service as action is an integral part of the programme, especially in the MYP community project.

Arts are integral to IB PYP. Through this powerful mode of communication, students explore and construct a sense of self while developing a sense of the world around. It provides a wide range of opportunities to respond to experiences and engage with historical, social and cultural perspectives. It stimulates students to think and articulate thoughts in new ways and through a variety of media and technologies. PYP recognizes the need to go beyond language as a means to learn, and hence uses arts as a medium of inquiry to provide learning, communication and expression avenues. Learning about and through arts is fundamental to the development of a child. It promotes creativity, critical thinking, problem solving skills and social interaction.

At OurPlanet we offer Music, Visual Arts and Drama. Each of these is a significant discipline in its own right, but the transdisciplinary nature of arts gives them relevance throughout the curriculum. Arts promote attitudes such as empathy and appreciation, and skills such as analysis, which help us see the uniqueness in each person and explore the commonalities that connect us. Work in arts is a way of conveying meaning, sharing a culture, developing one’s sense of self, and expanding knowledge. It provides opportunity to reflect on the aesthetic experience, to engage the imagination and explore what is uncertain. Through engaging with and creating art, learners are encouraged to reconsider familiar concepts and think about issues of culture and identity. Students are encouraged to situate their own creativity in a broader context by responding to the work of other artists.

Creative process in arts makes students explore and experiment in a continual cycle of action and reflection. This creative process, seen by PYP, is the driving force in inquiry based learning. At OurPlanet, students are given the opportunity to develop genuine interests, give careful consideration to their work and become self-critical and reflective. Evaluating their own work and of others is vital in empowering students to take intellectual risks. Exposure to arts opens doors to questions about life and learning. The process of art creation and appreciation is gratifying and shapes life-long creative thinkers.

  • Responding: the process of responding provides students with opportunities to respond to their own and other artists’ works and processes, and in so doing develop the skills of critical analysis, interpretation, evaluation, reflection and communication.
  • Creating: the process of creating provides students with opportunities to communicate distinctive forms of meaning, develop their technical skills, take creative risks, solve problems and visualize consequences. Students are encouraged to draw on their imagination, experiences and knowledge of materials and processes as starting points for creative exploration.

MYP arts brings forth the artists and learners of arts in students. Artists are curious. Curiosity about the self and the world makes students effective inquirers, seekers, learners and creative problem solvers. Creating, performing and presenting arts to engage and convey feelings, experiences and ideas helps students acquire new skills and master those developed in prior learning.

Learning arts is a dynamic and not necessarily a linear process. Students move towards a deeper understanding of arts by creating artwork and products, experiencing and demonstrating what is learned and attempted to convey.

MYP arts stimulate imagination, challenge perceptions and develop creative and analytical skills. The course encourages students to understand the context and cultural histories of artworks, support inquiring and develop an empathetic world view. Arts challenge and enrich personal identity and build awareness of the aesthetic in a real world context.

Significance of arts in MYP

Arts stimulate imagination, challenge perceptions and develop critical and analytical skills. Involvement in arts encourage students to understand the cultural histories of artworks, thereby supporting the development of an inquiring and empathetic world view. Arts build and enrich a personal identity and make students aware of the aesthetic in a real-world context.

Field trips and excursions take students away from their daily routine to experience nature, discover new perspectives and appreciate different cultural traditions.
